Rimsky-Korsakov’s interpretation of the Orientalist trend of his contemporaries took The Arabian Nights as its inspiration. The result was Sheherazade, a work that conjures up a series of fairytale images through enchanting melodies and dazzling orchestration. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 is mostly sunny throughout, with influences of opera, perhaps a gesture to The Marriage of Figaro, which was premièred around the time this concerto was finished.
