Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 reflects the havoc the Napoleonic wars were wreaking across Europe. The revolutionary piece is full of life, and is thought to be one of Beethoven’s favourite compositions.
Sibelius’s inspiration for Pohjola’s Daughter came from the 19th century Finnish epic poem ‘Kalevala’, which follows Väinämöinen as he attempts to pass the impossible tests set by a beautiful girl from Pohjola. Also performed is Sibelius's Violin Concerto, which forms the haunting and dark-hued heart of this concert.
