Rachmaninov's Second Symphony is a work of tremendous richness and power, composed some 12 years after the spectacular failure of his First Symphony, and a subsequent period of profound depression. It was pronounced a masterpiece at its premiere, a visionary journey through the Russian landscape; notable for its brooding opening movement, a thrilling Scherzo, the romantic sweep of its glorious slow movement and finally a sweeping and dramatic finale. Chopin's exquisite Piano Concerto No. 1 precedes the symphony, performed by charismatic young pianist Evgeni Bozhanov.
