Elgar’s Enigma Variations was the piece that established Elgar’s international reputation. A year after it was first performed it received premières in major concert halls across the UK, and within five years it had been performed across the globe, from Russia to the United States. For Ralph Vaughan-Williams, “here was something new yet old - strange yet familiar - universal yet typically original and at the same time typically English”.  The ‘enigma’ has never been unravelled. Still, it is a conundrum which doesn’t detract from the glorious music of the variations themselves. The Peer Gynt Suite number one, of the 'Morning' and 'In the Hall of the Mountain King' fame, and Mozart's evergreen Clarinet Concerto, make up the first half.
