This afternoon's programme features three highly autobiographical masterworks. The 'Pastoral' Symphony, is Beethoven's ultimate musical response to nature, his most cherished and dependable companion in life. In Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche ('Till Eulenspiegel's merry pranks') the exuberant young Strauss clearly associates himself with the main character as he gleefully wreaks havoc in a market place and upsets a group of passing nuns, disguised as a clergyman. Berg's Violin Concerto, composed to 'the memory of an angel', is a heartbreaking lament for Manon Gropius, the hauntingly beautiful daughter of Alma Mahler (composer Gustav's widow) by her second marriage.

This concert is supported by the Principal Friends of the Philharmonia Orchestra
