Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, From the New World, was written to celebrate the fourth centennial of Columbus’s discovery of America and Dvořák wrote of it that ‘the influence can be felt by anyone who has a nose’. However, the symphony’s American-influenced rhythms and melodies often give way to the folk music of his native Bohemia, betraying his love for his home country. In this evening’s programme it is performed alongside the Overture to Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, based on Shakespeare’s play, and Saint-Saëns’s extraordinary Second Piano Concerto. Written in under three weeks for the great Russian pianist Anton Rubinstein, the work, full of sumptuous themes, demands heroic virtuosity throughout.
