‘The symphony is a world’ Mahler proclaimed to Sibelius, and few composers have written music that conjures up as vast a range of musical imagery as his First Symphony. From the evocative opening, marked ‘like a sound of nature’, to a funeral march based on Frère Jacques and the sounds of military and folk bands it is a work of enormous power and breadth. Also being performed will be Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, an engrossing duet between the soloist and the orchestra which combines a lyrical violin part with a raucously energetic orchestral score.
