[During the programme] I worked with some very experienced people while also meeting and speaking with a lot of other people in the industry. It's a good hands-on way to learn about concert management and teaches the skills which are useful in any other arts industry job
Sarah Mitchell, Concerts Department Trainee July-December 2010

Unfortunately we are unable to offer short-term work placements. Placements are normally awarded on a 6-month basis.

The programme has given me six months excellent work experience in the field I now want to pursue. [I learnt] the importance of accuracy and attention to detail as well as gaining confidence in communicating with Friends. The assistance I have been given in the job application process has been invaluable.
Rebecca Hood, Development Trainee July 2010 - January 2011

Among the benefits offered by the programme are:

  • The opportunity to gain inside knowledge and hands-on experience within a thriving and dynamic arts organisation
  • The opportunity to shadow and learn from experienced professionals
  • The opportunity to form contacts within the arts administration world
  • The chance to learn from other departments about their role within the organisation through a series of presentations
  • Access to training courses, such as those run by the Association of British Orchestras
  • Free membership to Young People in the Arts during your 6 month training placement
  • Careers advice, including assistance with CV presentation and interview technique

I couldn’t recommend this training programme enough. I’ve learned an invaluable amount about a concert organisation from a very dedicated team of individuals who work hard to encourage and support you. From the beginning I felt like an important member of the team, and I can’t think of a way to be closer to the live music than as a the Concerts Department Trainee.
Natasha Riordan-Eva, Concerts Department Trainee January-May 2012

Successful candidates will be encouraged to attend the Orchestra’s performances and to meet members and supporters of the Orchestra. Previous trainees have gone on to forge successful careers in leading artist management agencies, opera houses and orchestras (including the Philharmonia Orchestra itself). Placements are voluntary and unpaid, although travel expenses (maximum equivalent of monthly travelcard, London zones 1 - 6, per month, during each Trainee placement) and a lunch allowance are available.

The programme gave me a fantastic insight into the busy life of an orchestral education programme and provided me with many opportunities, from being backstage at family concerts to attending workshops with the Royal Shakespeare Company. I learnt a lot in my time with the Philharmonia and the opportunity undoubtedly helped me start my career in arts administration.
Ellie Cowan, Education Trainee September 2009 - February 2010
